“The love of Christ compels us.” Taken from 2 Corinthians 5v14, this verse is the strapline of Christian Mission International Aid (CMIAID) and underpins everything the Christian charity does.
I recently arrived back in the UK after spending two weeks with CMIAID in Moldova. Started by Matthew and Ruth Hillier and Dan Marianciuc, the multi-faceted organisation does whatever it takes to share the light and truth of the gospel to those of all ages and stages of life in Moldova and other Eastern European countries.
Context: Poverty in Moldova
Most in Moldova live in abject poverty, with some surviving on the equivalent of just £25 a week, unable to receive vital necessities. Energy shortages are becoming increasingly severe, and in some cases, people do not survive the winter. CMIAID seeks to help by giving firewood and food, as well as running errands for those who cannot leave their homes or their beds.
During my time in Moldova, I joined a “Soup Kitchen” round with Igor. I asked him what the biggest causes of poverty in Moldova are. He said: “There are so many, but I would say the country not sufficiently recovering from [Soviet] times, and alcoholism, because growing vines in [gardens] is a way of making money.”
Children’s work
CMIAID’s children’s work was a particular joy to experience during my time in Moldova. Many little ones have put their trust in Jesus because they see how “religion” provides no hope, but Jesus does. Please pray for those whose families are reluctant or opposed to their children hearing the gospel.
Throughout the week, CMIAID’s workers reach out to schools through after-school clubs. Here, children learn memory verses and are encouraged through songs, games and gospel teaching that speaks of lasting hope and unconditional love.
In the autumn, CMIAID puts on a walk-through play for the children, acting out Bible stories or the lives of historical figures such as George Müller. I had great fun resourcing props, painting, and talking about the Lord as part of this outreach.
I’d like to share one particular story which makes my eyes fill with tears each time I think of it. During school time, my friend asked the children what their parents did with their time. One child, whose father runs the children’s work, said: “My daddy fixes children’s hearts.” I have tears in my eyes as I write this because of the profound way that the Lord is using this Christ-exalting organisation to heal those who are broken.
Moldova’s people ‘need the love of Christ’
My time with CMIAID was one that I will never forget, and I hope to go out again in the future, God-willing. The people of Moldova need the love of Christ so much – they need hope, truth and life that Jesus can alone offer (John 10v10). The workers of CMIAID dedicate their lives to ensuring people don’t miss out on an opportunity to have a personal relationship with their Maker.
