US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene says she realised Donald Trump "has no faith" after Charlie Kirk's assassination.
The Georgia Republican representative, who is stepping down from her elected role on January 5th, was speaking in an interview with The New York Times.
Greene told the paper she had a moment of realisation while watching the memorial service for Kirk, the well-known Christian and right-wing influencer. She said she saw how his widow, Erika, forgave her husband's killer.
But then the US President spoke, saying he was not himself like Kirk – “a missionary with a noble spirit” who did not “hate” his opponents. “That’s where I disagreed with Charlie. I hate my opponent, and I don’t want the best for them,” Trump stated.
Greene told the NYT: "That was absolutely the worst statement. It just shows where his heart is. And that’s the difference, with her having a sincere Christian faith, and proves that he does not have any faith."
Training
Greene said that this prompted her to move away from her "training" to "never apologize and to never admit when you’re wrong".
“As a Christian, I don’t believe in doing that,” Greene said. “I agree with Erika Kirk, who did the hardest thing possible and said it out loud.” She said she later told a friend: “I realized that I’m part of this toxic culture. I really started looking at my faith. I wanted to be more like Christ.”
She added: "Everyone’s like, ‘She’s changed.' I haven’t changed my views. But I’ve matured. I’ve developed depth. I’ve learned Washington, and I’ve come to understand the brokenness of the place.”
Greene said that she felt that she had been “naïve” to believe that Mr Trump was a man of the people.
Bitterness
According to Fox News, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle responded to the interview by accusing Greene of "petty bitterness."
In a statement reported on the news organisation's website, Ingle said: "President Trump remains the undisputed leader of the greatest and fastest growing political movement in American history — the MAGA movement. On the other hand, Congresswoman Greene is quitting on her constituents in the middle of her term and abandoning the consequential fight we’re in — we don’t have time for her petty bitterness."
