Dear Editor,
With reference to the article in the October EN, ‘Halloween: anything to celebrate?’, the simple and biblical answer to such a question must be a big fat no!
I was, as a Bible-believing person, both disappointed and angry when I was handed this article by a friend from church. Disappointed that as a society we now celebrate these pagan and satanic practices, even with the blessings it seems from those who profess the faith.
Angry that a paper with the title ‘Evangelicals Now’ instead of publishing an article about the great dangers of Halloween prints words that encourage Christians to engage with such things.
I am amazed at the naivety of people who claim they are Christians. Wake up! Yes we are in the world but we cannot be of it.
The Bible clearly tells us to stay away from such things. The practice of witchcraft, spiritualism, necromancy and all satanic contact must, by God’s people, be shunned.
This kind of article is not cool, I think that’s what the writer was trying to be, its really dangerous!

I am grateful to Kiprotich Chelashaw for encouraging us to think in a fresh way about Halloween.
However, I am concerned at the suggestion that we should ‘mock death’. We can certainly rejoice in our deliverance from death as Christians, but that is different to laughing ‘at’ death, which is still in Paul’s language an ‘enemy’ (1 Corinthians 15.26). Death is the hideous, yet just punishment on sin and as such should be wept over (John 11.35), not laughed at.
Would it be right for someone escaping execution to laugh at the guillotine which has destroyed countless others?
