Dear Editor
In connection with Professor Donald Macloed’s article in EN (March), ‘Do we all come the same way?’, I’m reminded of the story of the little Welsh girl being interviewed by church deacons or elders about her becoming a member of the church. Was she mature enough?
‘And tell us, young lady; before you got to the Wicket Gate, what do you know about the Slough of Despond ?’ Dropping a little curtsey, she simply replied: ‘Please, Sir, I didn’t come that way.’
Happily, many others, when God calls, are not forced to go through such a slough. ‘The terrors of law and of God, With me can have nothing to do, My Saviour’s obedience and blood, Hide all my transgressions from view.’ But the nearer we get to the Light of the World, the more our stains show up...
Yours faithfully,
