With our nation’s schools in the spotlight, can I remind your readers that there are plenty of opportunities for Christians to be salt and light in schools and to their pupils, parents and staff? As well as Christian staff, parents and pupils being salt and light to those around them:
• Many churches have links with local schools, doing assemblies and running Christian clubs for pupils
• Prayer groups operate for many schools around the country. If you don’t know of one in your area, try contacting www. prayforschools.org
• You may have heard of Street Pastors, but a similar initiative run by The Ascension Trust is School Pastors. School Pastors teams are now operating in 16 areas across the country, in secondary schools and in the post-16 sector. A number of new areas are at various stages of set-up or information gathering. • All schools have a Board of Governors made up of a mixture of parents, staff and people from the local community. Vacancies for governors come up relatively regularly and many inner city schools find it difficult to fill vacancies for governors. Here is a constructive and proactive way to support and be involved in your local school. The role of a governor is to be a ‘critical friend’ providing both support and challenge to the leadership of the school. You can apply to be a parent governor if a vacancy comes up at your child’s school or you can find out more information and apply at: www.sgoss.org.uk.
