Dear Editor,
I was encouraged to see the article ‘The Power of Love’ in the July en on the role of the local church in evangelism, but object to the way that door-to-door evangelism and leaflet distribution is dismissed as outmoded.
I wholeheartedly agree that evangelism is as much about listening and observing as it is about declaration, but that can be part of door-to-door evangelism. I fear the author is showing prejudice against a valid form of outreach that still has relevance today.
I spend several days each week knocking on doors and introducing the local church to offer friendship and spiritual support. I aim to build the kind of long-term relationships mentioned in the article. Let’s not forget that one thing the local church needs in the community is visibility. Without the tried and trusted methods of community visiting and leafleting the church can be invisible in the local neighbourhood. It’s sometimes astounding to find when I call on doors near a church that they’ve not had a visit from the local church in years, not even at Christmas!
Yours sincerely,
