Dear Sir,

Thank you for including the article on the arguments for and against the European Union (EU) in your April edition.

However, the article fails to mention the foundation document for the establishment of the EU, namely, the Treaty of Rome which came into effect on 1 January, 1958. This treaty clearly lays down the ultimate objective of the EU – political union of member states. The treaties of Maastricht and Lisbon have substantiated this objective. If the UK remains in the EU it will lose its sovereignty as a nation state and diminish the democracy for which it fought two world wars.
