Donald Trump’s faith?

First, our hearty thanks for all the work that goes into producing en. My wife and I hugely look forward to reading it each month.

But, with a background in teaching and writing about American politics, I was somewhat dismayed to read the item in the August edition reporting that James Dobson had said that the Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is ‘a baby Christian’. The person who claims to have led Trump to Christ is ‘televangelist’ Paula White. She was the pastor of a megachurch in Tampa, Florida, which she co-founded with her then (second) husband, Randy White. The Whites divorced in 2007. Last year, Paula White married her third husband, rock musician Jonathan Cain. My first point, therefore, is this – that were your readers to know a little more about ‘the person who led Trump to Christ’, they might regard that statement in a somewhat different light.

I wish to make no comment as to whether Donald Trump is or is not a man who has come to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. But it would be helpful to apply the test our Lord recommends that ‘by their fruit you will recognise them’ (Matthew 7.16).

To make matters worse, I now see that the theologian Wayne Grudem has jumped on the bandwagon of Trump apologists, claiming that a vote for Trump is ‘a morally good choice.’ I can only conclude that folk who regard Donald Trump in such a manner are themselves somewhat morally confused.
