The letter from Louise Morse of the Pilgrims’ Friend Society (March en) leads me to wonder whether it is right that believers, when they need to live in a care home, should set aside Jesus’ teaching about being salt and light to the world and retreat into a Christian enclave?
I live in an ordinary nursing home and am amazed at how few of the residents show any interest concerning what might happen after death.
Whilst the management, not surprisingly, views ‘religion’ as a private matter, it is often possible to offer residents a large print Gideons’ New Testament and Psalms and for the local clergy to visit regularly to administer Holy Communion and to lead a Christian discussion group.
It may be a muted witness, but it is somewhere to which a seeker could turn. And, of course, there is prayer.
