I write in response to the article ‘Living with difference’ in the July issue of en.
Many years ago, I was introduced to Jerry who was from a very strict Brethren background. I held out my hand, but he pushed it away. He then said: ‘I don’t believe in Pastors, and you are one.’ I am thankful to say this has never happened since.
Under the heading ‘Priority’ in the article, I never cease to be amazed at the unnecessary petty rules that churches make, like the Youth Club and girls wearing trousers.
As a young Bible College student, I was involved with a week-long mission. Halfway through, a group of under-age teenage drinkers, already drunk, entered the building carrying cider bottles. Ironically they stood under a notice saying ‘No alcohol on these premises’. What were we to do? Because they were not causing any trouble, we decided to ignore the ruling, letting them stay in the hope that they would receive something of the gospel. I believe we did the right thing, but only Eternity will tell.
