Several of the Christian organisations, missions and churches which I support or belong to include in their regular mailing a Prayer Diary, with valuable topics and news for every day of the year.
On 21 May this year, almost none of them noted that this was Ascension Day; the main exception being the (Anglican) Prayer Book Society.
Yet when December comes round, they all remind us that the 25th of that month is Christmas Day, and we happily and extensively share the good news of the Incarnation with local and global believers.
Is it not strange that so much is made of this winter festival, the date of which has no biblical support whatever, while we ignore the day of the Ascension, which can be worked out without much difficulty from the ‘forty days’ (Acts 1:3) from the resurrection, which itself is related to the Passover weekend?
It seems that we miss out on much joy, music, teaching and gospel opportunity by ignoring this notable day, which even in schools was widely observed nationally. until fairly recently. Come on, friends; God willing, you’ve still got time to get things right for 2021 – with plenty of hymns to help!
