Amanda Gormon, the 22-year-old American Poet Laureate, gave an impassioned rendering after Jo Biden was sworn in as President.
During her oration she said: ‘If we merge mercy with might and might with right, then love becomes our legacy.’
This sounds poetic, but what does it mean? It is good when those with power show mercy to people in real need. To merge power with right begs a question: ‘What is right?’ In many societies today those with power define what is right, they have already merged might with right. Consequently this is only true if ‘right’ is defined as a concept compatible with God. A just and fair society will only be found when those with authority recognise that they are living under God’s authority and are accountable to him for all they do. How we need to learn again the old proverb: ‘The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom’ (Prov. 1:7).
