Dear Editor,

I thank you for Evangelicals Now to which I am a fairly recent subscriber. May I please reply to the letter from Bernard Palmer (December en) re Michael Nazir-Ali’s defection to Rome?

True, Paul teaches ‘no divisions’ among true believers (1 Cor. 1:10). However, in the same text he first says: ‘…that ye all speak the same thing…’ then finally: ‘…that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and the same judgement…’

These are crucial requirements for every believing NT church (not a fallen denomination).

Will Michael Nazi-Ali really influence Rome? The picture of him prostrated before the cardinal tells me plainly ‘no, he won’t’.

I was in the Church of Rome for 39 years and never once heard the Biblical gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ preached. When I was converted by the glorious gospel of electing, saving grace of God by the Holy Spirit (not sacraments) I obeyed (at a high cost) the exhortation of the same Apostle Paul found in 2 Corinthians 6:17.

Roman Catholicism is not an apostolic church and I fear that Michael will only do and say what his superiors tell him. So I’m perplexed why such a high profile and intelligent man should defect to Rome. Mr Palmer is right in that Michael needs our prayers.

Yours sincerely
John F. Doran Banbridge
