Evangelical civil war

Dear Editor,

The article on page 17 of the August issue of en is most timely. It relates to ‘avoiding evangelical civil war’ and, as well as being based on Biblical teaching, is intensely practical as to how we relate to each other.

Some of us (myself included) were brought up in circles where it was considered imperative to ‘dot the i and cross the t’ which, although giving a good grounding in Christian thinking, could easily degenerate into fruitless arguments and needless offence.

There is a rather unknown hymn by Joseph Hart which commences: ‘When is it Christians all agree, and let distinctions fall? When, nothing in themselves, they see that Christ is all in all.’ As 2 Peter 3:18 says: ‘Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ’.

May the Lord help us to show virtues, as Paul exhorts the Ephesians in 4:25-32, so as not to grieve the Holy Spirit.

Yours sincerely,

John Martin East Sussex
