Dear Editor,

Thank you en for alerting us to the dangers of ‘Christian Nationalism’. [Jim Sayers: en October 2024]

The atrocities of the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland had begun when Herbert Carson spoke to our Christian Union meeting in Belfast on the subject of ‘The Christian and the State’. It was a memorable exposition of Scripture showing us the Biblical constraints the State should accept and the personal challenge to the believer’s conscience when it interferes with our faith. One particular illustration was from the US when a local example might have proved too unpalatable for some!

This November it will be 60 years since Pastor Carson formally resigned as Vicar of St Paul’s Cambridge: a very painful decision, yet made looking forward to what he saw as the freedom of nonconformity. To those of us who met him and were blessed by his ministry, he will not be forgotten.

Yours sincerely,
Leslie Hill, By email
