Donald John MacLean’s article in the January issue of en missed mentioning who the New Covenant as prophesied by Ezekiel and Jeremiah was inaugurated with, and I was left wondering why?
His article correctly identifies the recipients of the other covenants: the whole world with Noah, Abraham’s descendants, Moses with Israel, and the Davidic covenant with a line of kings.
It can only be a new covenant with those with whom God already had an old covenant i.e. Israel and Judah.
As a Gentile believer, I am profoundly thankful that I am included in the commonwealth of Israel (Eph.2) and have been grafted into the olive tree (Rom.11) through Christ, but shouldn’t we acknowledge the continuing faithful love of God with His covenant (old and new) people, Israel?
And, if I may, I suggest that this is true particularly at such a sensitive time when remarkable churches – the body of Christ – in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, struggle to hold onto and promote the peace bought through the blood of Christ shed on the cross outside the city walls of Jerusalem. How easy it is to forget our brothers and sisters, and all others, caught up in the tragedy of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
As MacLean concluded: ‘Covenant secures the stability of this world.’ It takes eyes of faith to see this. In Scripture, various leaders have attempted to annihilate the Jews, e.g. Haman, but God’s covenant with Israel and Judah cannot be broken.
