Your recent column on “Fallen Royals” [see the article here] suggests that the British royal family are “earth’s most committed non-meritocracy”. But I suggest that earth’s most committed non-meritocracy is none other than the universal Christian Church, the worldwide company of born-again Christian believers, saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone, the gracious gift of the one true God alone to supremely non-meritworthy sinners.

Dear Editor,
I found the comment on our Royal Family printed by you in December to be somewhat eisegetical.
The tension with which one has to wrestle is that the Lord makes explicit provision for a monarchy in the 17th chapter of Deuteronomy, but then impugns the appointment of Saul. He may in the latter incident have been condemning the Israelites’ motives, or their assessment of the moment’s need, but it makes God a liar to suggest that it was a criticism of monarchy itself.
Indeed, certain disgraced members of the Royal House should have heeded what is the real thrust of the Bible’s teaching on constitutions: that there are many sorts possible, but that none can thrive without holiness.
