Dear Editor,

en readers might be interested in a simple form of evangelism that is bearing real fruit in our local conservative evangelical Anglican church on the Surrey/West Sussex border.

A dear lady in the congregation left money in her will specifically for us to buy new Bibles. They duly arrived and are a great improvement, but what to do with the 100+ old ones?

Following a method pioneered, I believe, at St Nicholas, Sevenoaks, we put some plastic boxes in the church porch, filled them with Bibles and erected signs saying “Free Bible – please take one”.

The results have surprised and delighted us. In just a few weeks, nearly 30 have gone and we are having to refill the boxes regularly. Bearing in mind God’s promise in Isaiah 55v10-11 (As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.), perhaps other evangelical churches would like to give the idea a go?

Yours sincerely,
Iain Taylor
