Discipleship and teaching

Dear Editor,

In his article, “Have we lost the art of discipleship?”, Roy Summers notes “our obsession with the academy” and the separation of teaching from the life of the teacher. The warning is needed, although some formal instruction is inevitable. Might this have happened, alongside questions and answers, in the lecture hall of Tyrannus (Acts 19v9)? And could the Sermon on the Mount have been a set text for new disciples? Then, for homework, how about setting students the task of finding “texts Jesus must have used” on the road to Emmaus?

Yours sincerely,
