LIVE LIFE BIG OR STAY IN BED
Realising and releasing your potential as a woman
By Heather Puffett & Hazel Pattison. Monarch. 271 pages. £8.99
ISBN 978-1-85424-938-8

I confess I nearly gave up on this book very early on. The title irritated me, as did the somewhat cheesy style.

It felt very American, though the women who have written it are involved in a church in Kent. It also became evident quite soon that it’s from a very different churchmanship to my own, with a particular view of the work of the Holy Spirit.

But, as I was stuck on a train with it, I persevered! I was glad I had, as it improved greatly. There is some good teaching on what it means to be a daughter of the King with both the privileges and responsibilities that our calling brings. The section on what it means to be a good and godly friend, with the characteristics that should be evident, is excellent.

There is also some very helpful thinking on mentoring, again with much to say on the type of person we should be and how we must be growing in godliness if we are to be of real help to others, summed up in this challenging statement ‘Remember — you can teach what you know but you reproduce who you are!’ There is also an appendix on mentoring with lots of practical hints and tips, I wouldn’t want to use all of them, but there are some great ideas.

I’m glad I was stuck on the train with it, as, though I continue to have some reservations, much was definitely worth reading.
