I think this is a great book on Christian marriage. But I am pretty sure that some people won’t like it.
It is a great book, not because it says anything startlingly new, but because it is well-written and explains what Scripture has to say about marriage, courtship and singleness with lucidity, honesty, practicality and sensitivity to contemporary issues. Kathy’s chapter polishes up the much besmirched role of the husband as head of the family and is one of the best pieces I have read on the subject. Also the chapter on sex hoovers up much damaging secular misinformation and sets us to rights.
The reason I fear that many Christians in this country may have problems with the book is because its emphasis on the idea of husband and wife as sanctification partners will challenge our cultural ‘Britishness’. The book pursues the biblical teaching that, in truth and love, married couples are to challenge, pray for and help one another practically to grow in godliness. But British reserve could see that as rather intrusive and pushy. It may also be seen as giving licence to aggressive wives or husbands who think of their partners: ‘I’m in this marriage to change you!’ Actually I think the Kellers are making a point which is very necessary for many of us.
