Tackling sensitive subjects like suffering is not for the faint-hearted, but especially so when the writer has experienced years of tragedy with two of her children being born with severe handicaps, seeing their struggles with pain and witnessing their early deaths.
You might expect such a book to be sad beyond bearing. This book, however, is one of the most uplifting volumes that I’ve read. I found that, after reading any of the sections, my natural response was to praise God and spend time in prayer.
There is here a beautiful blend of biblical teaching with every section full of Scripture; examples of Bible characters; true stories from present-day Christians who have passed through extreme suffering or persecution; and Catherine’s own personal situation. Through all this constantly shines the theme that all circumstances are not about us, but about our Saviour Jesus Christ, and his glory.
This is not just a book for those who are themselves experiencing pain, but is so helpful in guiding pastoral care and helping the reader to consider their walk with God, and being prepared for whatever life may bring. The final chapter focuses on heaven and the importance of right thinking on this subject, not only in ultimate preparation, but also in our usefulness as Christian witnesses.
I would highly recommend Broken Works Best for all ages whatever their circumstances.
