This attractively illustrated book is aimed at 9-11-year-olds.
Set in contemporary time, it tells the story of a boy called Sam who meets a Roman soldier and, encouraged by his Christian grandma who has given him a Bible for his birthday, embarks on a journey with the soldier along the ‘Roman road’.
Good aim
It is an interesting idea and, as a Christian parent, I really like the author’s aim in writing a book that might help our children along the road to committing their lives to Jesus. Unfortunately though, in my opinion, the use of this allegory didn’t quite work, it felt a bit awkward and off-putting. However, in the interests of balance, I gave it to my ten-year-old daughter to read. Here is her review.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the way that at the end of each chapter you have to do something, for example, read Romans 2.3. It was a real page-turner for me because when things were going badly for the characters in the book, they suddenly became better again because they read the Bible! Which I loved.
