Royal Company is a very helpful devotional commentary on the Song of Solomon. The chapters are short and full of application.
Summary mention is made of many issues facing believers today – from assurance, to the use of our time, and erroneous teaching such as the openness of God theory, to name but three.
Much is made of the many pictures used throughout the book to illustrate the wonder for the believer of the intimacy with Christ. No one reading the book can fail to be given a deeper appreciation of what it means for the Church to be the Bride of Christ.
‘So Jesus draws near and reminds her that he understands her humanness and delights in her status as a member of the family of God. Jesus says to each disciple “You have ravished my heart.” This is an extraordinary insight into the love of Jesus for each of his people. He is enthralled by every one of them’ (p.150).
Each chapter explains the context and symbolism of the passage, refers to relevant Scriptures and ends with a personal challenge for the believer. The focus of the devotional is on the marks of a healthy Christian walk and there is much to provoke and inspire the sluggish Christian back to wholehearted devotion to their Saviour.
