A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME
Everyday Expressions from Scripture
By Timothy Cross
Christian Focus. 224 pages. £8.99
ISBN 978 1 781 915 530

This gospel-centred, easy-to-read book by Timothy Cross considers many sayings in everyday speech whose origins are in the Bible.

In addition to explaining each saying in its Scriptural context, each chapter, typically of five or six pages, explains the gospel very clearly to the unbeliever and contains much encouragement for the believer too. There are also many helpful quotes from hymns and such evangelical ‘worthies’ as J.C. Ryle and Jim Elliott.

Without embarrassment

This is a book you could give without embarrassment to a non-Christian or as a help to a believer. The volume covers some 52 well-known sayings: one a week, perhaps, if you can wait that long – I read it in one sitting! It provides a very accessible introduction to Christian belief and a comprehensive gospel challenge.

To quote the author: ‘It is a sad fact that the message of the Bible today … is largely unknown . Christians are in the minority and Biblical illiteracy and ignorance even amongst the educated seems to be at an all-time high. Yet … expressions from the Bible are frequently quoted. … If the pages that follow catalyse an interest in the Bible and cause a desire to know the One beyond and behind the sacred pages, the author’s labour of love will have been abundantly rewarded.’ The 223 pages of this book are rich in doctrine, warm with pastoral application and come highly recommended.
