WAR AND FAITH
Short Biographies from the Second World War.
By Don Stephens
Evangelical Press. 140 pages. £6.99
ISBN 978 1 783 971 503

This small, easy-to-read volume is a sequel to the author’s War and Grace.

It contains a further eight brief, but well researched, accounts of the lives of Christians who either came to real faith during WW2, or whose faith was tested, refined and made fruitful by the extreme circumstances they faced in fighting for Queen and Country.

Jewish Christian

The histories recounted are interestingly varied. They range from those of combatants or resistance fighters to those who were caught up in the Holocaust. There is even the touching story of a German Prisoner of War who came to faith though the influence of a twice-born Jew while waiting to be repatriated to his homeland!

There were times in reading when the reviewer wished he had been given more information about the life or personality of the subject of a biography, so as to be able to understand more clearly what made them tick and relate better to them. However, this is still a profitable and delightful read. It shows clearly the life-transforming power of the gospel of God’s grace in Christ and the importance of having a real, personal relationship with the Saviour when facing life’s great crises. By turns, it made this reviewer cry tears of joy at God’s wonderful mercy, sing the doxology in response to his marvellous providential control over all things and want to share this life-giving message with anyone who will listen! Highly recommended to all, especially those who struggle with thicker books.
