LISTENING
Hearing the Heart
By Robin Daniels
Instant Apostle. 218 pages. £8.99
ISBN 978 1 909 728 745

The author, now deceased, worked for 30 years as a psychotherapist and was a supervisor for St Marylebone Healing Centre and for hospital chaplains.

It is a book about listening to others and is peppered with biblical quotations. Certainly the beginning of the book provides all that is necessary to learn about the basics of being a good listener.

Psychotherapy

The book is written simply, devoid in the most part of psychological jargon. The chapter on silence is fascinating, but here it gets more technical before the book moves more into the realm of psychotherapy. The book finishes with an analysis of Beethoven and at that point it seems to be a bit disjointed. It is not an evangelical book and not a book for the ordinary reader. I would certainly give it to my students, who would find some valuable guidance on how to be good listeners.
