Morris’ aim is to explain that we shouldn’t see the gospel as an insurance policy to protect our comfy little lives as we wait for heaven. Instead, we should see it is a supernatural revolution of the heart and mind that puts to death our old life, leading us to a life of risk-taking for Jesus. The reason? Because if our hope is eternal life why do we hang on to the things of this life?
For both believer and unbeliever
Morris does this by explaining deep gospel and doctrinal truths in a way that is clear and simple, and can be easily understood by both the unbeliever and believer. It is the type of book that could be used for evangelism and discipleship, as it is useful in helping the unbeliever to count the cost of following Jesus, and in challenging the believer to step up their game.
The book has been written with the intention of giving us an uncomfortable read as Morris leads us to consider our priorities and to ask ourselves: ‘Am I willing to follow Jesus whatever the cost?’
Each chapter gives Jesus as the example of the perfect revolutionary, and Morris stresses that we should follow and reflect Him in risking our all for the sake of the gospel. He also (as if in anticipation of us using the ‘It’s okay for Jesus, He is God, I’m only human’ get-out-of-jail-free card) gives examples of past saints who have risked their all for Jesus and His church.
This book isn’t revolutionary, and neither does it claim to be; the reason for the book is to point you to the someone who is Jesus. Almost every page directs you to Jesus, as we are reminded of the price that He paid to save us and the reason we were saved, to serve Him regardless of the risk.
