Help them see what matters

One thing always spoiled my summer as a teen – the anxious wait for that dreaded brown envelope.

Exam results were important, but now I struggle to remember what subjects I sat. They prepare you to some extent for your future but if, as a parent, you are looking to build kids with real foundations that never go out of fashion – invest in the truth of God’s word.

Here are some helpful books for kids and families:

ASK by David Robertson (ISBN: 978 1 527 103 399) and its sequel – SEEK (ISBN: 978 1 527 107 052) – two books full of questions asked by real teens across the world. Issues like climate change, Black Lives Matter and gender are tackled Biblically.

In November keep your eye out for a book for primary school children – Is God for Real? by Jeriah Shank. (ISBN: 978 1 527 110 175) This an illustrated storybook that tackles questions such as ‘Is God Real?’ and ‘Did The Resurrection Happen?’

Big Thoughts for Little Thinkers: The Trinity (ISBN: 9780892216147) is a great little book to kick start your apologetics journey with a pre-schooler. I purchased a nice Kindle edition.

For young readers, the Lee Strobel Books – Case for Christ for Kids and Case for a Creator for Kids – take the same teaching as their adult equivalents but package them for curious children (ISBN: 978 0 310 719 908; ISBN: 978 0 310 719 922).

If your older teen is heading off to new horizons, slip this into their backpack. Apologetics by Stephen Nichols is in the Track series (ISBN: 978 1 527 109 674).

For parents, here are a couple of titles. The first one is in my to-read pile:

Mama Bear Apologetics: Empowering Your Kids to Challenge Cultural Lies by Hillary Morgan Ferrer (ISBN: 978 0 736 976 152). From what I have read so far, this book introduces the need for apologetics with young children and tackles the dangers and myths around the youth exodus from our churches. With the discussion questions, I think it would make a good choice for a church book group.

World-proof your Kids by Timothy Seismore (ISBN: 978 1 845 502 751) has a chapter about Prodigals. One reader found this book ‘helpful … as a basis for my own daily prayers for our family’.
