WORD ON THE STREET
By Awesome Cutlery
It’s not very normal to find an album that contains songs covering credal orthodoxy, a theology of the body, Christ’s return, the feeding of the 5,000, and Jesus’ faithfulness and our fragility.
It’s absolutely remarkable that all these (and more!) are found on an album designed for the whole family to enjoy (my six-year-old is a big fan), and it’s a huge achievement to have made something so cohesive and fluent.
Many kids’ songs are reluctantly loaded up by parents who have just enough will to stomach another time round – but in our family, this album is a glad exception. The adults probably enjoy it just as much as the kids do. I think that’s for two primary reasons: first, the songs are meaty and accessible, and second, it’s a lot of fun!
Just what the doctor ordered
In a world where our children desperately need a positive, Biblical, and accessible understanding of their bodies, the song Move Your Body is just what the doctor ordered: it’s a celebration of some wonderful, life-shaping truths about what it means to be a person – and it’s a song that makes you want to dance! Theology in action! My personal favourite track is Five Loaves Two Fish which doesn’t just tell the story, it brings it to life at several hundred miles per hour and leaves you breathless with joy because ‘Jesus is the bread of life’!
Paired with the great song-writing and theological clarity comes heaps of fun. There are things that make my three-year-old laugh, and (different) things that my six-year-old giggles at. But there’s plenty for the grown-ups too, and I’ve found myself grinning and laughing out loud as we’ve listened through to the album (several times) in the car. But I won’t spoil it – go and listen to it yourself
