A key figure in campaigns to ban smacking was jailed for sexually abusing a child in the 1960s in February.

Peter Newell admitted to five indecent and serious sexual assaults on a 12-year-old boy. He was the former co-ordinator of the Association for the Protection of All Children charity, also known as Approach. Approach operates through the Children Are Unbeatable! Alliance in the UK and the Global Initiative to End All Corporal Punishment of Children.

The Charity Commission said it was made aware of allegations against Newell in 2016 but it was not reported in the press until recently, amidst wider reports of sexual abuse at a number of household-name charities.
