A town crier has been successfully used by a church to attract people to its mission week.
Morley Town Crier Steven Holt was engaged by Morley Community Church in West Yorkshire to publicise its events.
As a result, several people came along to hear the gospel after encountering the unusual method of communication.
Church secretary Andy Dalton said that someone dressed in a period costume with a bell and a loud voice could be as effective as the latest technology.
During their Mission Week, Morley Community Church was able to make the Pilgrim’s Progress Bible Exhibition available to seven local schools and a total of 650 pupils listened to their acting team retell the story of Pilgrim making his journey to the Celestial City. Coffee mornings and pensioners’ lunches were organised. About 800 gospel newspapers and tracts were distributed. Scores of people received a gospel witness.
Morley Community Church is a small church of 24 souls working in a northern white working-class town. It is affiliated to the EFCC (Evangelical Fellowship of Congregational Churches).
