A trial of four men, including two Sudanese church leaders and a Czech aid worker, resumed on 29 August in Khartoum, with the prosecution accusing the defendants of highlighting alleged Christian suffering in war-ravaged areas of the country.
The four defendants are accused of conducting intelligence activities and providing support for rebels in Sudan’s South Kordofan region.
The prosecutor displayed photos and videos which he claimed were handed over to a US-based medical-relief agency. The photos apparently show sites in a war-affected area which borders the now-independent South Sudan. The prosecution alleges that the defendants claim the buildings were bombarded by government warplanes. The medical relief agency worker was also accused of intending to interview civilians whom the agency says were tortured by the Sudanese authorities. Some of the charges are punishable by death.
