I thank Andrew Horler for his challenging and informative letter (September EN) and agree that the teaching of evolution theory to primary school children is a major concern.
Those behind the promotion of this teaching are the ‘new atheists’. In fact, they may be considered ‘anti-theists’ (against God). Such people as Richard Dawkins et al believe that ‘the influence of churches and religious belief is positively harmful’. Their intention is to ‘destroy the intellectual and moral pretensions of Christianity’. Plainly their fundamental objective in attacking the biblical creation accounts of Genesis 1-3 and attempting to replace them with evolution theory is to undermine and ultimately destroy any belief in God.
Christians need to consider NT passages such as John 1.3,10 and Colossians 1.16, which emphasise the supremacy of Christ and his role as creator. This point is of paramount importance, but is contradicted by the enforcement of evolution theory. What is proposed by the Secretary of State for Education is a great heresy. Ignoring this, the UK evangelical community will be sleepwalking itself into irrelevance.
