There is another aspect to the subject of whether children should stay in all the way through church services as proposed by Kiprotich Chelashaw in his letter in the August issue of EN.
In many churches children do not leave until after the Lord’s Prayer has been said. Then, in their own classes, they learn scriptural truths in a way they can understand. It is for good reason that we do not teach the GCSE syllabus to primary school children. The children have their own teacher to relate to and to get to know. Their parents are better able to concentrate on the message without the distraction of their children.
These are just a few points in favour of children not staying in for the whole service. The alternative was tried in our church when we were running the youth work, but Sunday School was soon re-instated and most of the children continued to walk the Christian way and some went on to full-time service.
What is more important, meeting the needs of the youngsters or keeping to a system that means they are often bored and frustrated?
