I always read Chris Sinkinson’s slot, ‘Unapologetic Christianity’ and find it helpful. But I disagree with some of the ideas expressed in last month’s column, title ‘Hollywood apologetics’.
Chris says that he has ‘no doubt that Paul would have watched movies in the contemporary world’ in order to ‘engage with their underlying messages.’
Wouldn’t Paul’s approach have been to get out and meet people to engage with? Time and again we read that he reasoned with those in the synagogues. I wonder if we would engage with people more by joining, for example, art or photography clubs or history societies and so forth? Many Christians I know spend far more time watching films than they do reading the Scriptures or Christian literature. I can’t help feeling that Chris’s statement will encourage that kind of time wasting. I’m sure Chris is right in saying we need to engage with our culture but isn’t getting to know the people who make up that culture a better way.
