Chris Sinkinson raises some interesting issues about religion and politics in his ‘moment’ with the Prime Minister (EN, June).
It's not surprising that speaking about religion in public can be controversial. Too many would-be American presidents and other US politicians have used religion to try and win votes in dubious ways. Even past events in Ulster raise this contentious issue too.
Ironically, in the USA it’s declaring that one is an atheist that’s the controversial public statement! Clearly what matters here is defending free speech for all.
The right to speak out must be supported, whatever one thinks about any issue. We can always vote for someone else if we don’t like someone’s religion or their atheism.
