I was a little unhappy with Dr Anthony Forgery and McRoy’s review of Counterforgery by Bart Ehrman (July EN ), particularly the last paragraph concerning Christians. Two matters came to mind.
Firstly, that Dr M Lloyd-Jones did not enter into public discussions over the faith but stuck to declaring it. Having witnessed Muslims challenging Christians in the open-air, I note that very few seem prepared to listen, but prefer to insist on you listening to their views and answering their questions.
Secondly, and more importantly, is the question why Christians believe the Bible to be the Word of God. Very few know much about the original texts and the history of the Bible yet they believe it is God’s Word. The source of their faith is the Bible’s own internal evidence i.e. its prophecy, its unity (one message yet 40 authors written over 1500 years), its revealing the sinfulness of man and more personally my sinfulness – all the essential work of the Holy Spirit.
I agree it is useful to know something of the texts and the history of the Bible but it is a scholar’s work to refute the errors of this book. Better preach the truth, that man is a sinner and needs a Saviour.
Perhaps it would be helpful to have a book which lays out the weakness of the Koran; when was it written, how long after the death of Mohammad, how many versions are there, the inconsistencies and the major errors, something about the life of Mohammad; so that Christian workers can challenge them? A simple book that is easy to read.
