It is quite evident that freedom of speech in Britain is being restricted in one way or another today (see en front page November 14).
Believers, and some unbelievers, are aware of this, yet churches still have freedom to display the Scriptures on a notice-board outside their buildings. How long this opportunity will remain in our increasingly secularised society is unknown, but this fact seems to be ignored by many churches. Many activities are advertised, but the display of the Scriptures to all who pass by is so often neglected.
This no doubt applies in varying degrees to all denominations, but what is more worrying is that some evangelical churches are not using this great opportunity to share the gospel with the man in the street. I realise that some Christians may regard using the sword of the Spirit as being outdated and that we should now use ‘up-to-date’ sound bites. But surely the word of God has more power (Hebrews 4.12).
The restriction of freedom of speech in Britain should be a matter of real concern to all of us. So while we still have the chance, let us use the freedom that remains to declare unashamedly the word of the Lord.
