I was interested to read in November’s en the article ‘Reaching local people’ by Andrew King of Highbury Baptist Church.
However, as I read it I felt that a great opportunity was missed.
I applaud their desire to reach out into the local neighbourhood, but feel that there is an underlying problem which is not being addressed. It would appear that he is ‘seeking seekers’ rather than proclaiming the gospel to every creature. Can we really say we are engaging in evangelism by delivering leaflets which don’t contain the gospel message but only an invitation to explore ideas. His intention to spread the gospel locally has to be applauded, for who else is going to reach his ‘parish’ with the good news of Christ, and it was fantastic to read about the fruit of changed and transformed lives, which he mentioned.
I feel that the main reason for doing the leaflet delivery type of advertising Andrew writes about is driven by fear, along with the reason given, that of ‘buzzer to buzzer’, thus not being able to reach the householder face to face. Those who live around our church buildings deserve the opportunity to hear the gospel. Perhaps some training may help with the fear?
