Dear Sir, Peter Sanlon (September en) is rightly noting the seriously compromised state of the CofE now, and the even more confusing and concerning reticence of its conservative leaders to acknowledge the fact. Many of us wonder what has happened here, and why the paucity of response to the LGBT blitzkrieg within church and culture.
Here two thoughts to add to what Peter has said. Firstly, Liberal is not progressive. Liberals are wrong on these matters (as I see it) but at least the truly liberal believe in liberalism, i.e. large tent, agreeing to disagree, and so forth.
Progressives, on the other hand, need to theologically cleanse the culture and church of so-called ‘homo- and trans-haters’ like us. Just look at how TEC has been taken over, silencing and punishing public dissent while the still-orthodox treat it as a second order issue and look the other way. It is increasingly happening here too.
That is where the widely-held notion of ‘mutual flourishing’ hits a brick wall in my view. Progressives are by definition unable to endorse mutual anything because they experience us as nasty racists. Why should they be ‘nice’ to the equivalent (in their view) of the KKK?
This leads me to my second point. Progressives are right in one respect. The LGBT community (as shorthand) knows their folk need help. Where it falls apart is in the nature of this help. Dr Mike Davidson is at the forefront here and speaks of those who hate their unwanted and unasked-for attractions and want to move away from them.
