Trump dismay

Dear Editor,

What a helpful set of articles you gave us for the UK general election earlier this year – thank you!

I was therefore all the more surprised and dismayed by the article in September’s en (‘If you’re a Bible-believing evangelical Christian you WILL vote for Trump’ by Richard Morgan) that seemed to be telling Christians to vote for Donald Trump. On closer inspection, what the writer actually said was that 'if you live in the USA and are a Bible-believing Christian, the strong possibility is that you WILL vote for Trump'. Your headline put a very different slant on it by omitting the word ‘probably’.

Having said that, I was still dismayed by the content of the article for it did actually argue strongly for Bible-believing Christians to vote for Trump. I looked in vain for the balancing article. I looked again in October but still in vain. Is it appropriate to present such a one-sided view on the political choice facing our brothers and sisters across the Atlantic? You seemed to have no space for the view of very many Christians who could never vote for such a morally bankrupt man even to be on the school PTA committee.

Could you please ask someone from the USA to contribute an article on why they will not vote for Trump, despite all he has done to further the pro-life cause?

Yours sincerely,

Timothy Reynolds, Cranleigh

Thank you for this thoughtful letter. en has carried Trump-sceptical articles – viz Trump: Why is he supported?’, Trump is Haman?’ and ‘Donald Trump – victim and martyr?’.

In terms of wider political balance, please see also last month’s article on the American Solidarity Party, and the article on Evangelicals For Harris. So, over the months, we are trying to provide a range and balance of pieces. We also invited a prominent US Gospel Coalition writer to respond to Richard Morgan’s article, but this was unforthcoming. That said, I’m more than happy to take your point about the headline of the particular article that you mention!

Warmly, Ed.
