Tim Wells and Lois Wells are concerned that the gospel Jason Roach is proposing is derived merely from personal experience and ignores the atoning death of Jesus in dealing with our sin (en letters, August 2025). I tracked down the original comment piece they referred to (posted 16 May) and wondered if they had read the same article I had.
I have heard Jason Roach preach at my church and conclude that he believes in proclaiming the truth of “Christ and Him crucified” just as the apostle Paul did. Moreover, there is a clue in his article, which reads “Christ didn’t just bear our punishment on the cross; He bore our shame” (my italics). In other words, he asserts that Christ did bear our punishment (for the guilt of sin), but not only that!
Like any good communicator the author uses the power of personal story to drive home an important point, not to create a “new gospel”. He describes how by reframing our explanation of what Jesus’ death achieves we build a bridge for those burdened by shame to truly understand the one true gospel of grace.
His comments are to be commended to en readers.
