In response to Sue Sanderson’s question regarding a Christian course within the U3A [the University of the Third Age – an organisation providing learning opportunities in retirement] – the answer is yes, it can be done, and it is a superb opportunity for Christians who are members of their local U3A.
My wife and I have run what we believe to be the only overtly Christian group in a local U3A in the country. We have run Christianity Explored (simply the name of our group) for well over ten years now. When we mooted this idea we were interviewed by the then chairman as they did not want us proselytising – our response was to say the Bible would actually “stand on its own merits”. At this the person interviewing us broke down in tears saying they used to believe and operate as a church reader. This chairman then came to the group !
We have read many Bible books including John’s Gospel, Acts and Romans. We are currently going through the (free) Bible Course produced by the Bible Society – and plan to do an in-depth study of the Nicene Creed next. Every study needs careful work to make it “work” for the huge range of people who belong to the group.
We have ten members ranging from those who confirm they are not Christians, to those who used to believe, to those who are definitely Christians. One lady has had her glimmering faith amazingly transformed over the eight years she has been part of the group. One lady left the group because she said we were trying to convert her – my response was to say that(sadly) we are unable to do this but know SOMEONE who can. Our experience is that such a group is a long-term project which needs much perseverance and prayer.
Recently in our group meeting I was told I was being too evangelistic for a U3A group – I responded gently but unequivocally saying “nothing would alter my belief that Jesus is the King of Kings and only Saviour”. I added that should they wish to report me to our local U3A committee I would be prepared to defend what I say within the group.
We meet fortnightly in our own home where we share our passion as Christians with our friends. So my advice is to go ahead and quote the fact that Sherborne U3A has had a Christianity Explored group running for well over ten years.
