THE PURITANS DAY BY DAY:
Puritan quotations for each day of the year
By Harry John Horn
Banner of Truth. 394 pages. £8.00
ISBN 978 1 848 717 077
This book is set out clearly with a series of insightful quotations for each day of the year.
There are helpful indices listing authors cited, scriptural texts, and subjects that significantly enhance the value of this work. There is a good range of authors quoted, the majority of whom would be traditionally identified as within the Puritan tradition. However, the author, while focussing primarily on such individuals, has also selected some examples from others who lived at the same time in history.
A few minutes at a time
This book will not replace regular guides or notes used by Christians in personal devotions, nor is it the kind of work you would necessarily sit down and read through. However, its value is being able to open it for a few minutes at a time and be provided with sayings to ponder or thoughts on which to reflect further. It is beautifully produced and laid out and for a hardback book is generously priced. On occasions the language is quite dated, reflecting the period in which these quotations were produced, but the sayings are easy enough to understand. But it is possible readers might be hooked by some insightful sayings and, for those unfamiliar with Puritan works, there would be the good option of progressing to the Puritan Paperback series also produced by Banner of Truth, where works of authors like Thomas Brooks or Thomas Watson could be read with profit.
