To be honest, I would never have picked up this book if left to my own devices.
I probably expected it to be about biblical reasons for having people over even when I don’t want to. (I think that’s how a lot of Christians feel about hospitality.) Perhaps this book would lay a guilt trip on me?
Inspiring
Instead I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it inspiring and challenging and about much more than unwelcome dinner guests. There are nine studies which I did on my own, but which would equally work in a small group. The questions aren’t patronising or simplistic, but well applied and practical and her use of the Bible is clear and helpful, as well as broad-ranging. The leader’s guide is helpful and encouraging. In a world of multiculturalism, Patty Pell asks some searching questions and points us to biblical imperatives and encouragements. I found the book to be very accessible and easy to read and study. Nearly half the book consists of the Leader’s Notes, which I hadn’t noticed, and so I was genuinely disappointed to find that the studies had come to an end. The notes are detailed, knowledgeable and helpful.
The book is practical and resulted in me going out and doing things I may not have done without its prompting. I thoroughly recommend it to both individuals and small groups alike. It is very relevant to all of us in a world where loneliness and isolation are common and where cultural chasms are deep.
