Old guys still rule?

Michael Baughen and Timothy Dudley Smith at the celebration

‘Christ triumphant’ saw us in and ‘Lord, for the years’ took us out; ideal for the Youth Praise 50th birthday. Launched in turn in YP1 (1966) and YP2 (1969), these hymn-texts by Michael Saward and Timothy Dudley-Smith were both set to music by a youthful Michael Baughen, future Bishop of Chester.

With 300 others, Michael returned joyfully to All Souls’ Church Langham Place on 15 October. Alongside was another former rector, co-editor Richard (‘God is our strength and refuge’) Bewes, conductor Noel Tredinnick with the All Souls Orchestra, more pioneers including ‘TDS’, rising 90, and their current successors in ‘Jubilate Hymns’.

Michael recalled the risky venture that most Christian publishers wouldn’t touch, until the Church Pastoral-Aid Society took the plunge and found themselves handling a million-seller.
