When the question of remuneration of charity executives hit the national press during the summer, I fully expected that evangelical Christian aid agencies would not be among those paying their top executives amounts such as £80,000 and above.
It was a surprise to discover that they have felt it appropriate to pay such high salaries, and I wonder what other readers think. I am sure that those who have set salary levels for charity executives have come to their decisions on what seem to be good grounds. But I am concerned that many who work for such bodies at a lower level and many who give sacrificially out of much lower incomes may find it all a bit hard to understand.
The right response cannot be to stop giving to such bodies, which would only harm the poor whom they seek to support around the world, but if one is uncomfortable about it, how can one show that? Is the only way to get people of the necessary calibre and experience to pay these sort of figures, which are admittedly not high in comparison with other similar bodies?
