I wanted to come back on the front page piece from November’s en ‘Are we thought-criminals?’
Yes indeed, we are increasingly heading in that direction, though it is not too late to stem the tide. Essentially, we have been overtaken by a pansexual revolution twinned with a growing secularisation on one hand and an equally pernicious totalitarianism on the other.
May I suggest that we begin responding positively and practically to these challenges?
I keep recalling CS Lewis’s insight: ‘The more often he feels without acting, the less he will be able ever to act’ (Screwtape Letters, p. 82). Many sense something is amiss and some may realise how serious the situation is. But it appears that that is as far as things go. In my view, we need to do far more than at present. May I suggest six concrete actions here?
• Conferences. Attend the ‘Our Bodies Proclaim the Gospel’ conference, 14–16 January, with Christopher West, Emmanuel Centre, London. West offers a bold, biblical response to the lies of the sexual revolution. www.core-issues.org/events/our-bodies-proclaim-the-gospel has the details.
• Petitions. Petitions can be very powerful. Indeed, Wilberforce deployed this strategy to great effect. It raises awareness of social injustice and also enables each of us to stand with the condemned.
• Staying up to speed. Are you on regular email circulations from, say, Christian Institute or Christian Concern? Do you visit sites like Anglican Mainstream?
• Dissemination. It is said that Winston Churchill won the war by talking about it. Ask your church to start to discuss these issues, pray for them and support them.
• First-hand experience. The number of devout Christians who think that people are born gay and that once gay, always gay, is legion. So, ask someone with the T-shirt and who helps others out of gay world to come to speak to your church. CORE’s Dr Mike Davidson is superb here.
• Presence. I convene a group which meets regularly to share research and concerns, and to pray. Do be in contact if you wish to know more. Ls.n@talktalk.net
